Custom WordPress theme or Elementor Pro: which should you choose?

I build sites both ways, so I don’t have a reason to push you towards one. The right choice depends on how you’ll use the site after launch, not on which is “better” in general.

What’s the difference?

With Elementor Pro, the layout of every page is built in a visual drag-and-drop editor. You can move sections, add new layouts and design new pages yourself.

With a custom theme, the layouts are written in code for your design. Your team edits text, images, links and lists in simple labelled fields, but the layout itself is fixed, so it can’t be broken by accident.

Choose a custom theme if…

  • Speed matters. A custom theme only loads the code your design needs. It’s the easiest way to reach top PageSpeed scores, especially on mobile.
  • You mainly update content. If your team changes text, images, blog posts and case studies rather than redesigning pages, labelled fields are quicker and safer.
  • You want fewer moving parts. No page-builder licence to renew, fewer plugin updates and less that can conflict.
  • Brand consistency matters. Locked layouts mean every page stays on-brand, no matter who edits it.

Choose Elementor Pro if…

  • You want to design new pages yourself. If you regularly create new landing pages with new layouts, a visual builder gives you that freedom without a developer.
  • Your team already knows Elementor. There’s no learning curve.
  • You need many marketing pages quickly. Templates and saved sections make it fast to produce variations.

Cost over time

A custom theme usually costs a little more to build, because the layouts are written by hand. After that there’s no builder licence to renew, and less maintenance. Elementor Pro can be quicker to build, but it carries a yearly licence and more plugin updates over the life of the site.

What about speed with Elementor?

An Elementor site can be fast if it’s built carefully: Flexbox containers, global styles, few add-ons and good hosting. It will still carry more code than a custom theme, so the ceiling is lower, particularly on mobile.

Can I switch later?

Yes. Moving from Elementor to a custom theme means rebuilding the design in code and moving the content across, with redirects for any changed URLs so you keep your search rankings. This site made exactly that move.
